Angela Birchett On Her Vocal Performance In "Kirk Franklin's A Gospel Christmas"

In 1995 Kirk Franklin debuted his first Christmas album, Kirk Franklin & The Family Christmas. That album has become a holiday staple for years, especially in Christian households and now is the soundtrack to Lifetime's holiday movie Kirk Franklin's A Gospel Christmas. To give us more of a behind-the-scenes look at the process of creating this holiday movie and the uplifting music is actress and vocalist, Angela Birchett.

Birchett sat down with The Reel Noire Network host, Meah Denee, to discuss her performances in two Lifetime movies, A Gospel Christmas, and The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel.

Actresses Angela Birchett as Jacky, Shelea Frazier as Dorinda, Christina Bell as Twinkie, and Raven Goodwin as Denise in The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel

Growing up in Detroit, Michigan Birchett sang in the choir as a child alongside her sisters. She would also become the youngest member of the Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra when she joined at age 12 as a percussionist.

Birchett later went on to study vocals and music in college before eventually moving to New York City to pursue her dreams of performing on Broadway! She made her Broadway debut in 2015 in The Color Purple, and since taking that leap of faith she has performed in theatrical shows like Dreamgirls, Hairspray, Once on This Island, Rent, and several others.

She would soon cross over into television appearing in shows like Kevin Can Wait and The Blindspot before being cast as Jacky in The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel in 2020! Birchett speaks about connecting to Jacky Cullum Chisholm and how she knew she was the perfect actress to fulfill this role.

Birchett's most recent role is her performance as Stella in Kirk Franklin's A Gospel Christmas where she plays a business owner and choir singer who helps Pastor Olivia find confidence in her own voice and assists in building up the church's choir as the lead singer. Tune into the full interview above to hear Birchett speak more about her career and amazing journey.
